Earthy Luminary

Hello everyone!

I’m so excited to show you this pattern! I’ve been thinking about doing a luminary for quite a while now. I’ve seen some really beautiful ones on Pinterest, but, of course, I had to make one of my own.

This post may contain affiliate links for products I use and recommend. If you make a purchase through one of my links, I may receive a small commission at no extra cost to you. For more information, please see my disclosure policy.

The more I thought about these little Earthy Luminary jars, the more ideas I came up with on how to use them!

They would be adorable in the bathroom holding q-tips or cotton balls. Or how about in the kitchen to hold silverware or other small kitchen gadgets that you use all the time and want to keep handy, ready for use like a can opener.

One of my personal favorites is using the jar to hold your crochet hooks. Who doesn’t like easy access?

It’s called a luminary and obviously you can put candles in them to give an ambiance to any indoor or outdoor setting. I personally love the one that hangs!

I’ve decided that I want to use all three of them outdoors when we have fires in our backyard and I’m going to put citronella candles in them to keep the mosquitoes from eating us alive!

My camera doesn’t take very good night photos.

A jar can be so versatile, but also very plain. When you spruce it up with an easy crocheted cover, it becomes a whole other item with visual interest and style. The example is crocheted using Loops and Threads Impeccable in Toasted Almond, which, to me, looks like Earth tones.

Feel free to give them your own special flare by using whatever color yarn you love! Any medium or worsted weight yarn will work.

This Earthy Luminary pattern was created to cover a quart-sized or pint-sized Ball canning jar and both versions of the pattern are included below. The pint-sized jar has the wide mouth and personally I think that the cover looks and fits better on that one, but I’ve also put the same pattern on the quart-sized jar with a standard opening.

The top of the cover is a little loose, but I didn’t want to change the pattern to make it tighter, because then the sleeve wouldn’t fit around the bottom portion of the jar. It still looks super cute anyway!

The jars I used were also the ones that were more square at the bottom, so the beginning of the pattern is a very basic granny square. I believe that it would still work for a round jar, but I haven’t tested it.

Can you think of any other ways to use these cute little jars? Let me know in the comments below!

Finishing

If using a solid keyring style ring at the top, thread any one of the hangers through it and just let it slide to the base. Once you’ve finished Round 11, you can just pull the ring back to the top for hanging.

If using a ring that opens like the shower curtain style ring, go ahead and work Round 11 completely. Once finished, open the ring and insert the ring through only 2 of the hangers, preferably the ones that are opposite each other. Close the ring and your luminary is ready for hanging.
