I’d like to share my latest design with you today — the Floral Table Mat.
Whether you just want to protect the top of your surfaces or you like the more decorative element of the table mats, this little beauty will give a romantic feel to any room. Use it on your coffee table, end tables, night stands or even on top of your microwave. The options are endless!

This super cute floral table mat is made using size 1 super fine yarn (sock yarn) and let me tell you…it’s incredibly light weight and soft! Using the light weight yarn wasn’t nearly as difficult as using thread for the more traditional doily and it was nice that I could use a G (4.25 mm) hook instead of those teeny tiny hooks used for thread. This yarn gives this floral table mat a little substance without being too bulky. I’m definitely going to be making some more of these!
And, since this is made up of granny squares, you can make any design you could possibly imagine! Some examples would be a long table runner, a large oval mat, place mats for your dining table or, if you’re really ambitious, a table cloth or bedspread.
I did block this example, but I rushed it and I don’t think I did as good of a job as I should have since you can see where I placed all of my pins around the perimeter. I’ll have to set aside more time the next time I block something. I’m relatively new to blocking, but it really does give a more polished, professional look to your crocheted items. Well, if you do it right that is. Ha!
Do you block your crochet? Let me know in the comments below. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

hdc – half double crochet

Notes:
- When making the half squares, you will finish off after every row. Always keep the Right Side (RS) of the granny square facing you. When you attach the next color, you will go back to the right hand side and attach your yarn in the first stitches from the previous row.
- You can make your table mats in any other shapes that you wish such as rectangles, long table runners, ovals or even as large as tablecloths and bedspreads. You’ll just need to adjust your number of granny squares.
- When making the first cluster stitch of a round, the ch 2 counts as the first stage of the cluster. So, ch 2, (YO, insert hook back into same st, YO, draw back through st, YO, draw through 2 loops on hook) twice, YO, draw through all 3 loops on hook, ch 1. This will be indicated by “complete cluster” after instructions to ch 2.
- Don’t turn your work throughout the entire pattern.

Finishing
Arrange your squares according to the photo below.
Using a tapestry needle and yarn, you can use your preferred method of joining granny squares or whip stitch the squares together working in the BLO. When joining granny squares, always have right sides facing each other.
Note: When you attach the half square to the full square, the corner ch 3 are not on the half squares (lower right). Align the FULL corners (lower left) of the granny squares as shown in the photo below and stitch them together, ignoring the ch 3 corners.
Border
With Gray
Round 1: Attach gray to any st along the edge of the table mat. Sc evenly around the entire piece. Sl st in 1st sc made of round.
Round 2: Ch 1, *sc in next 5 sts, 2 sc in next st* Repeat from * to * around. Sl st in 1st sc made of round. Finish off.
Note: If your Round 2 doesn’t end with the sc increase and you have extra spaces left, it’s not a big deal. Just work single crochets into the remaining sts. It won’t affect the outcome of your table mat.
With Beige
Round 3: Attach beige in any st. Sc evenly around. Sl st in 1st sc made of round.
Round 4: Repeat Round 2. Finish off.
With Gray
Round 5: Attach gray in any st. Repeat Round 2.
Round 6: Ch 1, sc evenly around. Sl st in 1st sc made of round. Finish off.
Weave in any ends.
Block if desired.
