Here is a really quick photo tutorial for how to crochet the 3-Double Crochet Puff Stitch that is required for the Light & Lacy Poncho pattern.

These photos were taken as I was crocheting the border on the poncho, but if you were working them as a normal row of crochet, you would skip 2 stitches in between each 3-dc puff stitch.

This tutorial is already assuming that you are familiar with how to complete basic stitches.

Abbreviations

3-dc puff st — 3-Double Crochet Puff Stitch
sc — single crochet
ch — chain
st(s) — stitch(es)

Written stitch description

*YO, insert hook into st, YO, draw back through the st, YO, draw through 2 loops on hook* Repeat from * to * 3 more times in the same st. YO, draw through all 4 loops on hook.

The yarn I am using is Bernat Softee Baby – Grey Marl. The hook is a Boye I/9 (5.25mm) that I purchased at Wal-Mart.

Okay, let’s get started!

So the pattern is to (sc, ch 3, 3-dc puff st) all in the same stitch and then skip 2 stitches and repeat.

Single crochet in the designated stitch.

Chain 3.

In the same stitch that you worked your single crochet, yarn over and insert your hook into that stitch. Yarn over again and draw back through the stitch. You will have three loops on your hook.

Yarn over and draw through only two loops on you hook.

Yarn over and insert your hook back into the same stitch you have been working in. Yarn over and draw back through the stitch. You will have four loops on your hook.

Yarn over and draw through only two loops on your hook. Three loops remain.

Yarn over and insert your hook back into that same stitch one more time. Yarn over and draw back through the stitch where you will have five loops on your hook.

Yarn over and draw through only two loops on your hook. Four loops remain.

Yarn over and draw through all four loops on your hook to complete the puff stitch.

You will skip two stitches and begin again with a (single crochet, ch 3 and 3-dc puff st) all in the same stitch. Repeat according to the pattern directions.
