It’s an easy-level pattern that uses single crochets, double crochets, and the crab stitch. I chose a yarn with a sparkly silver strand running through it to give this guy a glamorous twist, but you can certainly use any size 4 medium weight yarn you wish!

Please keep in mind that if you intend to use this as an outdoor decoration, the Ghost Windsock is best kept under a porch roof or somehow protected from the weather. I know from experience that the elements are not kind to yarn, and when wet, may begin to sag and stretch.

Ghost Windsock

Materials Used:

Finished Size Approximately:

13” Height x 6” Width

Gauge:

13.5 double crochet stitches and 7.5 rows in a 4” (10cm) square (not important).

Special Stitches:

Crab Stitch — Working in the opposite direction along the row than you typically work, insert your hook into the next st, YO and draw back through. YO and pull through 2 loops.

Abbreviations:

YO – yarn over

FC – foundation chain (starting chain)

ch – chain

sc – single crochet

dc – double crochet

Notes:

  • I ended up playing yarn chicken with one skein of yarn, but I did win with exactly 1” to spare. If you crochet tightly, you can probably get away with one skein, but if you crochet loose, you may need a second skein. If you’d rather not purchase a second skein, you can omit the 25th round of crab stitches OR only work 23 rounds of dc rather than the 24. Just some options for you.
  • You can use anything you want to hang your ghost. I chose fishing line because I liked that it was nearly invisible, creating a “floating” ghost effect. You can absolutely use chains made from the yarn, cord, thread, etc. Just bear in mind that yarn chains will use more yarn, and you may need that second skein.
  • Adding fringe to the bottom would also create a great “floaty” look when it blows in the breeze.
  • If you intend to keep this outside, please note that yarn doesn’t hold up well in weather and can begin to stretch when allowed to get wet and remain hanging. This decoration may be better under a porch roof or indoors, so you’ll be able to keep it much longer.
  • A photo tutorial is available on my blog for how to crochet around a plastic ring. Even though we are crocheting around a metal ring, the steps are the same. You can see that tutorial at this link.
  • Tip to keep your back seam straight: work your first stitch of each round into the very first space available after your chain. See photo below.

Finishing

Using a hot glue gun, fabric glue, OR tapestry needle and yarn, attach both eyes and mouth onto the side of the ghost that doesn’t have the seam of stitches.

Cut 3 strands of fishing line—24” each.

Attach the three strands of fishing line equidistant around the macramé hoop (approximately 25 sts apart) by folding them in half, pulling the middle through the stitch, and running the 2 ends through the loop you pulled up. Tighten the line by pulling the 2 ends.

It’s the same method for adding fringe to a crochet project.

Once all three ends are attached, collect all 6 ends together at the top, ensuring that the macramé hoop is level. Tie all 6 ends together. You may need to put a dot of glue on the knot to keep it from coming undone.

Attach your binder ring at the top for hanging. Since the ring opens and closes, you’ll have more options for where you can hang your ghost. How about in a tree?

The Mini Windsock Ghost pattern was used in the photos. The pattern is available in my shops and on my blog at this link.

I hope you’ve enjoyed the Ghost Windsock pattern!
