Building Blocks Baby Blanket

colorful granny square style baby blanket done in corner to corner stitch draped across a chair

The Building Blocks Baby Blanket is a gorgeous afghan that you can customize all around! Adjust the size by adding or removing blocks. Change the colors for older children or even adults. Change the hook and yarn size for a thicker or thinner blanket. Work as individual blocks like granny squares for a summer time sweat free project. Or even crochet it all as one Corner to Corner blanket. What’s not to love?

This is a very beginner friendly pattern. If you’re new to the world of Corner to Corner (C2C), I’ve created a completely free beginners course on YouTube where I show you step-by-step, everything you need to know to begin creating amazing picture crochet items. I’m pretty proud of this course and I’ve put a tremendous amount of thought and effort into it. I know you’ll love it too.

The steps are all broken down into individual videos, so if there is something specific you need to learn, you can simply watch that video. Or you can watch the entire course from start to finish. It’s very user friendly. Click here to see the list of videos on my blog post.

The Building Blocks Baby Blanket is perfect for beginners because if you choose to create the blanket in the granny square style, you can practice crocheting the solid C2C squares and the ones that change colors. The small blocks use easy color changes and you’re able to repeat them many times rather than working on a large project. You’ll get the satisfaction of completion much quicker!

At the end of this post, I have PDF files you can download for free that contain the charts for the changing color squares or the entire blanket if you want to make it in one piece.

Notes:

  • This blanket can be made two ways. You can either create all of the blocks separately and sew them together similar to a granny square blanket or you can create the entire blanket all in one piece using the provided chart.
  • This pattern uses the C2C (corner to corner) crochet technique. With C2C, you can either begin using a chain 4 and work half double crochets or chain 6 and work double crochets for your blocks. This example is worked using the chain 6 and double crochets so if you choose the half double crochets your finished blanket will be smaller than the example.
  • You can customize this blanket to your desired size by adding or removing blocks. You can also customize it using any size yarn you desire. Use the recommended hook size on yarn package.
  • If you are new to C2C, then I have an entire beginner course available for free on YouTube. You can see the list of videos here.
  • Here are the videos for the border: RIGHT HANDED & LEFT HANDED
  • If the main chart is too small to see, I have a video describing how to create a larger chart using 4 or 6 pages. You can see that video here.

*** American crochet terms used throughout.

Round 1: With White, attach yarn in any st. Ch 1, sc in same st. *Sc in every st to corner. In corner space, (sc, ch 2, sc) all in same st.* Repeat from * to * until you reach your 1st sc made of the round. Sl st into 1st sc.

Seaming

Using the chart provided and the white yarn, arrange your blocks according to the pattern or use any pattern that you prefer. With the backs of the blocks facing each other and a slip knot on your hook, insert your hook into the front loop of the stitch on the block facing you and then through the back loop of the corresponding stitch on the block furthest from you, sl st. Repeat in all stitches until the blocks are seamed together.

Please note: You can use any seaming technique you prefer. This is merely a suggestion.

Final Border

  • Here are links to the videos demonstrating the final border:

RIGHT HANDED

LEFT HANDED

  • It is worked in the round. No turning.

With White

Round 1: Attach yarn in any st. Ch 1, sc in same st. *Sc in every st to corner. In corner space, (sc, ch 2, sc) all in same st.* Repeat from * to * until you reach your 1st sc made of the round. Sl st into 1st sc.

Please note: You will be working a sc into the horizontal loop directly behind the stitch you were going to work into (see photos below). Work all sc around using the same loop. This creates the “ridge” look that is also around your blocks where they are seamed together. If you don’t want the ridge, work regular sc around for all of Round 2. I will call this rear loop the “ridge loop” for the remainder of instructions for Round 2. This is demonstrated in the video too.

Round 2: Ch 1, sc in ridge loop directly behind the sc from previous round. *Sc in every ridge loop to corner. In corner ridge loops of sc from previous round, (sc, ch 2, sc) all in ridge loops of corresponding sts of corner.* Repeat from * to * until you reach your 1st sc made of the round. Sl st into 1st sc.

Please note: Round 3 is back to normal sc.

Round 3: Ch 1, sc in same st. *Sc in every st to corner. In corner space, (sc, ch 2, sc) all in same st.* Repeat from * to * until you reach your 1st sc made of the round. Sl st into 1st sc.

Round 4. Ch 1, sc in same st. Ch 2, puff st in same st. *Skip 1 st, (sc, ch 2, puff st) all in next st.* Repeat from * to * all the way around the perimeter of the blanket. Sl st into the 1st sc made of round.

Finish off. Weave in ends.
