Casual Friday Slouch

Oh man, am I enjoying the Casual Friday Slouch hat! The pattern was a breeze and it’s been field tested in some nasty Pennsylvania winter weather. I couldn’t be happier with it!

I made two of these — one in I Love This Yarn! in Antique White and another in a super pretty blue/grey yarn called Red Heart Unforgettable Waves in Riverbank. I absolutely love them both and use them interchangeably. (My coat is black, so pretty much anything goes with it.)

The only thing I wish I would’ve done with this pattern is maybe trying one of those super lux faux fur poms! I’ve been searching the stores around me for faux fur to make my own, but there is absolutely zero in this “backwoods” area that I live in.

I still need to check JoAnn fabrics. Maybe I will have some luck there. Do you buy your faux fur poms or make them yourself? Any recommendations on a good designer of poms? Let me know in the comments below! Thanks!

So this pattern uses only single crochets and double crochets. It creates a beautiful striping effect, without looking like a circus tent! Ha! Essentially, it is a rectangle that you fold in half, stitch a side seam and then cinch at the top. Easy peasy and very beginner friendly!

Let’s get started, shall we?

UPDATE!!! If you prefer a more “beanie” type of hat with less slouch, try a foundation chain of 34 and follow the same instructions below. Your hat will look like this…

Casual Friday Slouch

Materials Used:

Finished Size Approximately:

24” circumference (opening) x 12” length (unfolded)

Gauge:

14 double crochet stitches and 7 rows in a 4” (10cm) square.

Abbreviations:

FC – foundation chain

ch(s) – chain(s)

st(s) – stitch(es)

sc – single crochet

dc – double crochet

sl st – slip stitch

Notes:

  • This hat is made as a flat panel and then seamed down the side and the end is then cinched closed using yarn and a tapestry needle.
  • A larger hook size is recommended for the foundation chain in order to keep that edge from being too tight. This suggestion is optional.
  • You can adjust the size around the head by adding or removing rows from the main panel. If making a child sized hat and you need it to be shorter, you will need a multiple of 6 chains plus 4.

*** American crochet terms used throughout.

Instructions:

Using I/9 (5.25 mm) crochet hook

FC: Ch 40

Switch to H/8 (5.00 mm) crochet hook for the remainder of the project

Row 1: In the 2nd ch from hook, (sc, ch 1, dc) all in same ch. *Skip next ch, (sc, ch 1, dc) all in next ch* Repeat from * to * across until 2 chs remain. Skip next ch, sc in last ch. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), *In next ch-1 space, dc. In next sc from previous row, dc* Repeat from * to * across. Turn. (39 dc)

Row 3: Ch 1, (sc, ch 1, dc) in same st ch 1 comes out of, *skip next dc, (sc, ch 1, dc) all in next st* Repeat from * to * across until 2 sts remain. Skip next st, sc in 3rd ch of turning ch from previous row. Turn.

Continue to alternate Rows 2 and 3 for pattern for a total of 40 rows.

Row 41: Ch 1, turn your panel so that you are working along the shorter side, sc evenly to next corner.

Cut about a 20” tail for seaming. Thread your tail into a tapestry needle.

Fold your panel so that the two shorter ends are touching. Place stitch markers evenly along that edge through both thicknesses to keep it even as you stitch.

Whip stitch the two ends together, removing the stitch markers as you go along. When you get to the end, turn your hat so that you are working around the end that will be cinched together. (The end of the hat that you single crocheted evenly along will be your finished opening.) Run your hook into the stitches along the edge the entire way around the top of the hat. Pull your tail tight to cinch the hat closed. Begin weaving your yarn in a zig zag pattern across any remaining opening, pulling tight to close the hole. Finish off.

Flip your hat right side out and fold the open side upward as shown in the main photo.

Enjoy your Casual Friday Slouch Hat!

  1. You’re very welcome, Jean! Oh, Amazon…I’ll have to check that out. I’ve actually saw some at A.C. Moore the other day too if you didn’t already know. Not sure if you have one near you, but I thought I’d throw that out there. Thanks for commenting and have a great day!

  2. Thanks for sharing this pattern! Just to let you know, I got some really nice fur poms for hats from Amazon.

  3. Hi Jan! Yes, this hat pattern is for an adult. That is so cool that you’re creating yarn from dog’s fur! I have 4 dogs and sure have tons of it. Ha! I saw a video of a woman spinning yarn from her dog’s fur. It was very interesting. I hope you enjoy the pattern for your fundraiser and make tons of money for your cause. Thank you for commenting. I love hearing everyone’s stories! I’ve never been to Lancaster, but I’ve heard it’s beautiful out that way.

  4. Hi Erica,
We will be making the hats out of our dog breed’s fur – Leonbergers. This will be one of our many crafting fundraiser items created from their fur. Currently we have been making scarves, teddy bears, roses and Xmas ornaments. Fingerless gloves and hats are next mixed in with a little acrylic or colorful wool blends since their fur is a fairly neutral blonde/tan.
Just confirming – are the directions for an adult size?
    Thanks

  7. Hi Erica! Thank you so much for taking the time to reply and work out the pattern. I appreciate your time and dedication. You are a true professional. Have a wonderful evening.

  8. Hi Gale! You are so welcome for the pattern! Be sure to check out just above the pattern for the UPDATE where you can change the foundation chain to get a more beanie-style hat for your charity work in case people would prefer less slouch. Just more options for you! Thank you for the recommendation for the Amazon faux poms! I will definitely give them a look!

  9. Thank you so much, Angela! I definitely need to get to Joann’s and see what they have. I will also look into the Firefly Hook. Thank you for the recommendations!

  10. Hi Donna! You’re welcome! I’m so glad that you like the pattern design! I’m sorry it took so long to respond. I actually made a new hat in more of the beanie-style so that you could see what it would look like. You don’t need to change the amount of rows. You would need to change the number of beginning chains. So if you use a foundation chain of 34 you will get a more beanie style hat. There are photos just before the pattern starts where I have UPDATE in all caps. I actually love it this way and can’t wait to get a faux fur pom to put on it! Thank you for your question and I hope you love the updated version!

  11. thanks for the pattern Erica. I usually make hats for charity and I will certainly give this one a try. Check out Amazon for faux poms. I got a dozen for $13.69 and I think are very nice.

  12. Beautiful hat! I am in FL and the Joann’s by me recently started carrying faux fur poms in the same bins with the yarn. Worth a check!

My favorite source for poms hands down is The Firefly Hook!

  13. Hi Erica,
Thank you for the great pattern. I was wondering if I wanted to make it a beanie instead of a Slouch how many rows do you think I should make it? Thanks!
