Chick Applique

Chick applique flat chick in yellow and orangeChick Applique

Hey there!

Recently I discovered my love of making appliques! I love being able to use my creativity to create a form of art and the fact that my medium is yarn…that just blows my mind. I used to draw and paint when I was younger, but I never imagined I’d be able to turn a drawing into something tangible.

You can add the Chick Applique to many projects like scarves, blankets, baskets and bags, basically, whatever you can think of. He’s quite large at 5.5” Height x 6” Width, so I wouldn’t use him for smaller projects. My inspiration for the Chick Applique came from the bunny I just recently released that was a part of the Easter Wreath pattern.

I’ve considered making a sheep to go along with these guys to make it a trio, but that is still in the works.

I didn’t have enough time to make it to the store to get more yarn, so I just used leftover yarn that I used from other projects. That’s why the other patterns use Red Heart and this one uses I Love This Yarn! Any worsted or medium weight yarn would work for this project. They all make great stash busters!

Plume on Top

Cut 3 – 4” lengths of Buttercup. You will work all three strands in the same stitch on the top of the head, but you work them one at a time.

With one strand, fold in half. Insert your hook into the stitch and wrap your loop around it and gently draw through, but not the entire way. You will have the two ends poking out of one side of the head and the loop sticking out the back. Insert the two ends into the loop to wrap around the stitch. Pull the two ends to tighten. Repeat with the other two strands in the same stitch. Trim to your desired length if you choose.

Finishing

Attach the beak first, using a tapestry needle and the long tail left over from making the beak.

Attach the eyes using the sewing needle and thread.

Next, lay your feet out the way that you want them. If you choose, you can pin the feet first before you begin sewing so you know they are straight and level. Stitch the feet onto the body using the tapestry needle, long tails and the main photo as a guide.

Last, attach the wings where the ch 2 is pointing away from the head. Using the tapestry needle and long tail, stitch your wings into place.
