Crescent Moon Blanket

crescent moon blanket

The Crescent Moon Blanket is a corner to corner (C2C) afghan pattern that is an easy/intermediate level pattern because of the moon’s swirls. But, I’ve also included the graphs for this pattern with the swirls removed for an easy level pattern. You can choose which you would prefer to make! Or crochet both. I don’t judge! 😉

Happy Halloween! Are you ready for a fun project with the cutest of results? It’s also reversible, showing a mirror image of the graph. This crochet pattern would be perfect for any child this holiday season. And, hey, some adults would love this blanket as well.

My son, Caleb, has claimed this blanket for himself, and, as you can see, he is thrilled! (He is showing the reverse of the blanket.) It makes me so happy that I can create such special things for my children that will last a lifetime.

I’m sorry that I don’t have a finished blanket done without the swirls. I hope that you are able to envision it using just the graph that is near the end of this blog post.

In my opinion, the swirls weren’t that difficult. I think my Scarecrow Afghan was more difficult, although not too bad, when it came to changing colors. If you’re up for a challenge, then definitely check out that intermediate level pattern that you can see by clicking on the name.

My oldest son, Ben, is 6′ tall and had to crouch down to hold this blanket up for me to take a picture. He’s turning 14 this weekend. Poor Caleb wasn’t tall enough to hold it up!

The border is made up of half double crochets and is completely optional. You can choose no border or to create a border of your own with a different stitch. I liked the way the stripe of white seemed to frame the design.

This graph will work with any form of corner to corner such as mini C2C and it would also work with cross stitch or any other craft that requires a graph. Just know that if you use mini C2C, your finished blanket will be smaller than the example.

If you purchase the pattern, you will get a copy of the main instructions shown below, all 10 graphs (5 for the Main Graph and 5 for the easier Alternate Graph), and the written line-by-line instructions for both versions of the graph. The links to purchase are at the bottom of this post.

An example of line-by-line instructions is as follows: B stands for black, N stands for navy and Y stands for yellow. The pattern would read: Row 14: 3N, 5B, 2Y, 4N. You would need to work 3 navy blocks, 5 black blocks, 2 yellow blocks and then finally 4 navy blocks for this row.

The written instructions keep you from having to count blocks on the graph. They are only included when you purchase the pattern. Only the main instructions and graphs are free.

Notes:

  • This Crescent Moon Blanket pattern uses the C2C (corner to corner) crochet technique. With C2C, you can either begin using a chain 4 and work half double crochets or chain 6 and work double crochets for your blocks. There are many other stitches you can use for C2C and all of them will work with this graph. This example is worked using the chain 6 and double crochets so if you choose the half double crochets your finished blanket will be smaller than the example.
  • I encourage you to crochet over top of any loose ends as you work to help reduce the amount of ends to weave in after you’ve finished.
  • When you first start out you may want to use a stitch marker or scrap of yarn to mark the bottom of the blanket. This will help you keep track of which direction you are working since there is so much Navy.
  • Since this Crescent Moon Blanket pattern is a rectangle, you will decrease on one side only for several rows while still increasing on the opposite end. I recommend placing a stitch marker at the first corner to remind you to keep decreasing on that side while you continue to increase on the opposite end.
  • The border is optional. It adds 2” to all sides.

*** American crochet terms used throughout.

  2. Hello Ms Erica, I love the blanket and have been sifting through your designs. You’re SO creative! I need to ask, how would I make this a bit wider? I have done c2c but not much and was trying to figure out how to make this wider without adding length. Thank you for any input you can give me.
