The Ivory Sage Dish Towel works up quickly. I made the entire towel in just a few hours!
The puff stitches give the towel a thickness that protects surfaces from heat as well as being absorbent when using cotton yarn.
Let’s get started with the pattern!
Ivory Sage Dish Towel
Materials Used:
- 1.5 skeins of I Love This Cotton! in Ivory – 180 yds/3.5 oz – 165 m/100 g (size 4 medium weight yarn)
- 0.25 skeins of I Love This Cotton! in Sage – 180 yds/3.5 oz – 165 m/100 g (size 4 medium weight yarn)
- G (4.25 mm) Crochet Hook
- Tapestry Needle
Finished Size Approximately:
22” H x 14.5” W

Abbreviations:
FC – foundation chain (starting chain)
ch(s) – chain(s)
st(s) – stitch(es)
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
BLO – back loop only
sl st – slip stitch
sk – skip
sp – space
Notes:
- This pattern is a four row repeat.
- You can also create any size dish cloth you prefer by simply adding or subtracting rows.
- You can adjust the size of the foundation chain (starting chain) by using a multiple of 12 chains plus 11.
- You can use any border that you wish if you don’t like the sample.

Puff Stitch — *YO, insert hook into stitch, YO and draw back through* Repeat from * to * 2 more times. YO and draw through all 7 loops on hook.
Instructions:
FC: Ch 47
Row 1: In 5th ch from hook, dc. Dc in next 5 chs. *Sk 1 ch, (puff st, ch 1, puff st) all in next ch. Sk 2 chs, (puff st, ch 1, puff st) all in next ch, sk 1 ch, dc in next 6 chs* Repeat from * to * across until 1 ch remains. Dc in last ch. Turn.
Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next 6 sts, *(puff st, ch 1, puff st) all in ch-1 sp, (puff st, ch 1, puff st) all in next ch-1 sp, dc in next 6 sts* Repeat from * to * across until turning ch remains. Dc in top of turning ch. Turn.
Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as dc), (puff st, ch 1, puff st) all in next st, sk 2 sts, (puff st, ch 1, puff st) all in next st, sk 1 st, *dc in next 6 sts, sk 1 st, (puff st, ch 1, puff st), sk 2 sts, (puff st, ch 1, puff st) all in next st, sk 1 st* Repeat from * to * across. Dc in top of turning ch. Turn.
Row 4: Ch 3 (counts as dc), (puff st, ch 1, puff st) all in ch-1 sp, (puff st, ch 1, puff st) all in next ch-1 sp. *dc in next 6 sts, (puff st, ch 1, puff st) all in ch-1 sp, (puff st, ch 1, puff st) all in next ch-1 sp* Repeat from * to * across. Dc in top of turning ch. Turn.
Row 5: Ch 3 (counts as dc), dc in next 6 sts, *sk 1 st, (puff st, ch 1, puff st) all in next st, sk 2 sts, (puff st, ch 1, puff st) all in next st, sk 1 st, dc in next 6 sts* Repeat from * to * across until turning ch remains. Dc in top of turning ch. Turn.
Repeat Row 2 – Row 5 for 40 rows. Don’t finish off after your final row.
Border:
Round 1: Ch 1, *sc evenly to the next corner. In the corner st, 3 sc.* Repeat from * to * 3 more times. Sl st into first st made of round. Don’t turn.
Round 2: Ch 1, *sc to the next corner. In the corner st, 3 sc.* Repeat from * to * 3 more times. Sc in any remaining sts along first side. Sl st into first st made of round. Finish off with main body color. Don’t turn.
Round 3: Attach new color in same st where you left off. Ch 1, *working in BLO (see photo below), sc to the next corner. In the corner st and in BLO, 3 sc.* Repeat from * to * 3 more times. Sc in any remaining sts along first side. Sl st into 1st st made of round. Don’t turn.
Round 4: Repeat Round 3. Finish off. Don’t turn.
Round 5: Attach main body color in same st where you left off. Ch 1, *working in BLO, sc to the next corner. In the corner st and in BLO, 3 sc.* Repeat from * to * 3 more times. Sc in any remaining sts along first side. Sl st into 1st st made of round. Don’t turn.
Round 6: Ch 1, working through both loops normally, *sc to the next corner. In the corner st, 3 sc.* Repeat from * to * 3 more times. Sc in any remaining sts along first side. Sl st into first st made of round. Finish off. Weave in ends.
