Love/Luck Reversible Sign

This past February I went a little nuts designing and creating crocheted decorations for Valentine’s Day. I was trying to build up enough inventory for when I opened my Etsy shop and launched my blog. I had the idea to make the word “Love” into a vertical hanging sign. And how cute to make the “O” a heart instead!

So I sat down with my graph paper and graphed out a heart design. With my favorite crochet hook, I grabbed some Red Heart Yarn that I had left over from another project and got to work. I wasn’t sure how it was going to turn out, but I kept going anyway. The final result ended up being a really cute wall hanging decoration!

Well, Valentine’s Day came and went and my sign started to curl and it looked a little sad.  It hung on the wall in our living room all the way into March.  For some reason, I wasn’t ready to take it down.  Maybe deep down I knew that the sign was meant for something more.  Even though I was working on my next project, the Love sign kept staring me in the face every day.

After thinking about it for quite a while I realized that “luck” had four letters as well. St. Patrick’s Day was coming up fast. A second panel would also stiffen it up a bit and reduce the curl and wouldn’t a horseshoe be fun for the “U”?

It was an “Aha!” moment. Problem solved.

The Love/Luck Sign is reversible and not overly difficult to make if you are familiar with tapestry crochet. Even if you aren’t thrilled with tapestry crochet, I created a cross stitch version as an alternative.

The pattern for the panels is all written down below and you can use the graph as a guide for your stitches. One single crochet stitch is equal to one square on the graph.

There are actually different ways to work the tapestry crochet.  Some people like to carry their yarn across while hardly ever making any cuts and knots.  I, on the other hand, prefer to cut the yarn every time I change a color unless I’m able to keep working upward.  I don’t care for how the colors of yarn bleed through your design when you are carrying unused yarn along.  I prefer crisp clear colors.  It can be a bit tedious, all the cutting, tying and weaving, but I believe you get a great end result and the extra effort is worth it.  It’s completely a preference thing.  There is no right or wrong way to do it.

I wonder what other words could be made into a hanging sign. Something to think about.

Enjoy!

Abbreviations:

FC – foundation chain
ch – chain
st(s) – stitch(es)
sc – single crochet
sl st – slip stitch

Notes:

This pattern can be worked in two ways.

Option #1: Using the graph, you can create the sign with tapestry crochet. There are no written instructions for this other than the FC and Row 1 to get you started. Just follow the graph, changing your colors accordingly throughout the pattern. You will also follow the “finishing” section at the end of this pattern, which will be the same for both options.

Option #2: The written instructions are for the solid panels without the tapestry crochet. On these solid panels, you can cross stitch the letters by following the graph. One single crochet stitch on the solid panels will represent one square of the graph. Each white square of the graph represents one “X” stitch.

I recommend printing out the graph and, with a pencil, marking each row with an arrow to indicate which direction you are working as well as which row you are on.

* American crochet terms used throughout.

Instructions:

Make 2 (1 Burgundy, 1 Hunter Green)

FC: Ch 20

Row 1: In 2nd ch from hook, sc across; ch 1, turn. (19 sc)

Row 2: Sc across; ch 1, turn. (19 sc)

Row 3 – Row 71: Repeat Row 2.

Finish off.

With Soft White

Cross stitch the letters on each panel using a tapestry needle.

Finishing

Tie a knot in either end of your satin cord.

Take one of the panels and flip it upside down, laying it on a flat surface. Arch your cord into an upside down “U” shape, resting the knots on the panel, 3 sts in from either side and about 2 sts down from the top of the panel.

With your second panel, lay it right side up over top of the 1st panel.

The 2 panels will now have both of their wrong sides facing each other with the cord in between.

Edging

With Soft White

Sc through both thicknesses and around the cord the whole way around the panels (2 sc at the end of each row to make a corner).

Note: I was able to just hold my two pieces together and adjust my cord as needed when crocheting, but if you are having trouble with the cord moving around while you are trying to work, you could always try baby safety pins to keep it still.

Sl st in the top of the 1st sc made of your edging.

Finish off and weave in end.
