The Maui Convertible is more than just one item. When you get creative, a simple rectangle can be used in a myriad of ways you never thought possible! Let me show you how…

First of all, I love the colors in this yarn! It’s a size 2 fine weight yarn that creates an amazing drape and the colors have the feel of a beach vacation in Hawaii or maybe even the Caribbean. My son actually picked out this skein. And yes, it is only one skein or cake…whatever you prefer to call it. Ha!
So let’s dive into the multitude of ways that you can actually wear the Maui Convertible!
You have the option to attach a button to fashion a poncho — no need to create button holes because of the lacy design. Any hole along the edge can be a button hole. If you don’t like the idea of attaching a button, it is completely optional. There are so many more ways to wear this.
My personal favorite! If you wrap the Maui Convertible around your back and have the two ends hanging in the front, secured by a button, you get an adorable beach cover up. I was so excited when I saw this. I told my husband that if we get to go on a cruise or go to the beach, I am totally taking this with us!
Here is the back view when used as a cover up…
If the colors and beachiness aren’t your style, you can use this pattern for a super scarf. It’s light and lacy and would look fabulous in any color! Also makes a great gift for the upcoming holiday season.
How about as a simple wrap? Drape it around your shoulders while you walk along the beach. Change the colors to match your prom or bridesmaids dress. Don’t forget about date night!
Throw it over your shoulder for that glamorous old Hollywood feel…
A hair stick makes a wonderful pin to keep your wrap in place! Or you can use that beautiful broach your grandmother or mother might have given you.
There you have it! Just a few of the ideas I could think of for wearing the Maui Convertible. Can you think of any ways that I didn’t? Which is your favorite? Let me know in the comments below!

FC β foundation chain
ch(s) β chain(s)
st(s) β stitch(es)

dc β double crochet
Notes:
- If you’d like to use this stitch pattern for any other project, you will need a foundation chain with a multiple of 8 plus 5.
- The (dc, ch 1, dc, ch 1, dc) grouping is referred to as a βfanβ.
- The buttons in the example were purchased at Wal-Mart in the sewing department.
- The mannequin is a size 6/8.
- There is no need to create any button holes because of the lacy design. You can use any hole to thread your button through.
- For Plus Size ladies (3XL+), if you wish, you can increase your width with a FC of 141 (adds approximately 2β) and also add more rows until you are satisfied with the length and drape (recommended β see next bullet).
- To determine if you need to make it longer, wrap your panel around your shoulders or around your chest if making a cover up with the opening on the side or front, depending on what you’re making. Make sure the ends of the panel are even. Pinch with your fingers or pin with a safety pin, where your button will go. Add rows until you are satisfied with the drape and length.
- Please keep in mind that if you increase the width or the length, you will need a second skein of yarn.
- For shorter ladies, you may want to work less rows to decrease the length.
*** American crochet terms used throughout.

Alternate Row 2 and Row 3 for 165 rows. Finish off. Weave in ends.
Button (Optional)
Wrap your panel around your shoulders or around your chest if making a cover up with the opening on the side or the front, depending on what you’re making. Make sure the ends of the panel are even. Don’t make it too tight. Place a stitch marker through one side or edge where you are pinching. Not through both sides. Remove the wrap.
Note: If the buttons that you chose have small holes, you will need a sewing needle and thread. If the holes are large enough for a tapestry needle to fit through, you can use leftover yarn to attach the buttons.
Using a tapestry needle and some yarn, stitch the button to your panel where the one stitch marker is located. Remove the stitch marker. It doesn’t matter which side of the panel since it is double sided.
Wrap your panel around yourself once more and thread the button through any opening or hole on the same side of the wrap, just further down that edge.

I’m so glad to hear that you like the stitch! You can use any yarn that you wish and whatever size hook that the package recommends. Just keep in mind that if the yarn is a heavier weight than the example, your shawl may come out slightly larger than the example. Since it is a simple shawl, it really shouldn’t matter. Thanks for commenting, Isabel!
Really pretty stitch. Im wondering if i could use 2 balls of a mandela yarn i have, size 5 mm hook? Im dying to use it π
Thank you so much! I’m so glad to hear that you love the stitch and how it hangs. The drape was my favorite too! Have fun and thank you for commenting!
Hi Sandra! I’m so excited to hear that you love the Maui Convertible pattern! I think it was meant to be since you already had that yarn on hand. It really is beautiful yarn, isn’t it!? I truly appreciate your sweet words. Thank you!
This is such a beautiful stitch! I love the way it hangs. I’m addicted to Nicole Studio yarn!! I can’t wait to try this!
Hi Erica,
I just read your email “Summer’s not over yet!” and I am in love with the Maui Convertible pattern. Simple yet elegant does it every time for me. I recently bought a cake of Cotton Colors by Nicole in the colorway Grey/blue/tan for the first time, and wondered what pattern I was going to make — and here was your pattern in my inbox!
You are a very gifted teacher and do a great job of explaining the pattern in your tutorials. Also – the charts are great for those of us who are visual learners.
Thank you!
