May Flowers Shawl
Hey there!
April showers bring May flowers!
Here is the second shawl in the themed set. Last week I released the pattern for the April Showers Shawl that you can see at the link. Be sure to check it out. It has raindrop shaped holes. How cute is that!

UPDATE: I made a second version of the May Flowers Shawl in black. The pattern is the same.
The May Flowers Shawl is made up of granny squares with puff stitch flowers in the center. You can choose any colors you wish for your garden. This pattern is very easy, just time consuming as any granny square pattern is. It’s also thick and oh so warm, which is perfect for those unpredictable Spring temperatures!
The only stitches you need to know are the single crochet, double crochet and the puff stitch. The border is made up of the moss stitch, which is simply single crochets and chains.
And, just like the April Showers Shawl, this pattern can be altered to fit Youth through 5XL. I’ve included a chart for the color pattern if you choose to make yours like the example. A table provides the number of squares needed for each size. I’ve taken all of the guesswork out of sizing for you.
I didn’t intend to make a video for this shawl since it was just made of granny squares, but if you would like to see a video, please let me know in the comments below and I will certainly make one.
So there you have it! An adorable set of shawls — one light, one heavy — perfect for finally getting outside to enjoy the sunshine, flowers and that sweet smell of Springtime. Enjoy!

Finished Size Approximately:
87” Width x 46.5” Length
Gauge:
1 granny square is 2.5” square.
Special Stitches:
Puff Stitch
*YO and insert hook into stitch, YO and draw back through* Repeat from * to * 3 more times. YO and draw through all 9 loops on hook.
Back Loop Only (BLO)
Abbreviations:
MC – main color
YO – yarn over
FC – foundation chain
ch(s) – chain(s)
st(s) – stitch(es)
sc – single crochet
dc – double crochet
BLO – back loop only
Notes:
- To change the size of the May Flowers shawl, add or remove the horizontal rows from the chart from the longest side. Each row will subtract 4” since the squares are on a diagonal. See chart below for sizing. Youth to 5XL.
- For sizing, stand with arms spread wide. Measure from finger tip to finger tip (or a few inches longer if you like your shawls over-sized) and find the closest measurement from the chart below. If your measurement is in between, I recommend you size up.
- The border adds 1.5” to all three sides, which is included in the table of measurements below.
- You can use the magic circle for the FC if you prefer, but it’s not required.
- You don’t turn your work after rounds. Just continue in the same direction for each round.
- You can decide which side of the granny square appeals to you. I chose to use the “wrong side” of the squares to face outward. I also used slip stitches to join the squares and I preferred the slip stitched ridges also facing outward. You are free to join using whichever technique you prefer.
*** American crochet terms used throughout.

See Table below for number of squares to make per size.

Block your squares, if desired.
Joining Squares
Join your granny squares by following the color chart below or by creating your own design. You can slip stitch, mattress stitch, whip stitch or use any other methods of joining that you prefer. In the example, I used the slip stitch to join the squares.
I really liked the look of the “wrong side” of the granny squares and chose to use that side as my exterior on the white version. To achieve this look, place two granny squares with their “Right Sides” facing and join using your preferred technique through the BLO of both squares.
The black version uses the “Right Sides” facing outward and the slip stitch seaming in the back.
Border
White Version:
Round 1: With MC (white), attach in any corner point of the triangle. *(sc, ch 2, sc) all in the same corner space. Sc evenly along the border until you get to the next corner.* Repeat from * to * 2 more times. Sl st in the 1st sc made of Round. Finish off. Weave in ends.
