First, I’m going to give you the photo tutorial for the Modified Cluster Stitch. If you scroll further down, the photo tutorial for Rows 4 – 7 of the cardigan pattern will be just after. The instructions for each photo are below each photo.

Photo Tutorial for Modified Cluster Stitch #1

This stitch is worked into the side of the single crochet.

After you single crochet and chain 3, you will complete your cluster in the side of the single crochet as indicated by the orange arrow.

Yarn over and insert your hook into the side of the single crochet.

Yarn over and draw back through the stitch. You will have 3 loops on your hook.

Yarn over and draw through two loops on hook.

Yarn over and insert hook back into the side of the single crochet. Yarn over and draw back through the stitch. There will be four loops on hook.

Yarn over and draw through all three loops on hook.

The Modified Cluster Stitch #2 is worked almost exactly the same with the exception of an initial chain 4 instead of the chain 3. You will complete the cluster in the first chain instead of the side of a single crochet. Photos for the Modified Cluster Stitch #2 are included in the full photo tutorial below.

Photo Stitch Tutorial for Rows 4 – 7 for the Water’s Edge Kimono

Both modified cluster stitches are sometimes referred to as “petals” in this tutorial because they remind me of flower petals.

All photo instructions are below that photo.

This photo tutorial does not cover Rows 1 – 3 since they are basic, but the written instructions are included here for your convenience.

FC: Chain the appropriate amount of chains according to the sizes available on the main pattern page for the Water’s Edge Cardigan.

Row 1: In 5th ch from hook, dc. Dc in each ch across. Turn.

Row 2: Ch 4 (counts as dc + ch 1), skip the st the ch 4 comes out of and skip the next st, *dc in next st, ch 1, skip 1 st* Repeat from * to * across. In top of ch 4 turning ch, dc. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as dc). *In ch-1 space, dc. Dc in next st,* Repeat from * to *. Dc in the ch-4 space. In the third ch of the ch 4 from previous row, dc. Turn.

This photo shows Rows 1 – 3. Ch 1 and turn to begin Row 4.

Single crochet in the same stitch the ch 1 comes out of, then *chain 3.

Complete the cluster in the side of the single crochet. For more details on the Modified Cluster Stitch #1, see the first part of this post.

Skip two stitches from the previous row and double crochet in the next stitch.

Chain 4.

This is the Modified Cluster Stitch #2. Complete the cluster in the first chain after the double crochet.

Skip two stitches from the previous row and single crochet in the next stitch.*

Repeat from * to * across to the end of the row.

Your last single crochet will be in the top of the turning chain.

Chain 8 and then turn your work for Row 5.

Complete cluster in 5th chain from hook. Single crochet in the double crochet from the previous row.

After the single crochet, chain 3 and complete the cluster in the side of the single crochet. (Cluster stitch not shown in the above photo)

*Chain 4 and complete the cluster in the first chain of the ch 4.

Skip two of the petals (or cluster stitches), and single crochet in the next double crochet from the previous row as indicated in the photo above.

This photo shows the completed single crochet.

Chain 3 and complete the cluster in the side of the single crochet* Repeat from * to * across to the end of your row. Triple (treble) crochet in the single crochet from the previous row that the petal comes out of.

Triple (Treble) Crochet

Yarn over two times, insert hook into the stitch, yarn over again and draw back through the stitch. Yarn over and draw through 2 loops, yarn over and draw through 2 loops and yarn over and draw through 2 loops again.

This photo shows the finished triple crochet to end Row 5.

Row 6: Chain 1, turn your work, single crochet in the same stitch the ch 1 comes out of, chain 2. Double crochet in between the next set of petals.

Chain 2 and *single crochet between the next two petals.

Chain 2 and double crochet between the next set of petals, chain 2.* Repeat from * to * across to the end of the row.

To end the row, single crochet in the same stitch you began your first petal of Row 5.

Row 7: Chain 3, 2 double crochets in the ch-2 space from the previous row, *dc in the next st, 2 double crochets in the next ch-2 space* Repeat from * to * across. Dc in the top of the first single crochet from the previous row.

Repeat Rows 2 – 7 for the pattern.
