Pumpkin Placemat

Hey there!

I’m so excited to share my Pumpkin Placemat pattern with you all today! Wouldn’t your seasonal or holiday table look so cute with one of these at every place setting? I believe it would!

So I can’t take full responsibility for the idea of this placemat. I was inspired by a quilted version that I had found on Pinterest that you can see at this link. The original was made up to look like a jack-o’-lantern, but seeing as we are so close to Halloween and there probably isn’t enough time to make them before the big day, I thought that basic pumpkins would be a more versatile pattern. You can use this pumpkin placemat for Fall, Halloween and Thanksgiving!

Please excuse my poor blocking skills. I’m still new at it. πŸ˜›

If you would like to make these pumpkins into jack-o’-lanterns, I recommend using black felt! You can cut the facial features out of the black felt and hot glue them to the placemats. I think they would be so adorable and if anyone happens to make those, I would love to see how they turn out!

I chose the Caron Simply Soft in Gold Ombre for this project because I loved how it’s an ombre yarn and not just straight orange. I wanted it to have the depth that the quilted version I saw on Pinterest had. It definitely has more visual interest, don’t you think? One skein makes one mat with a little left over. This yarn was also used on an infinity scarf pattern I designed in 2017 that you can see at the link. I highly recommend it!

As for construction, you will be working with granny squares. So easy, right? The granny square pattern that I used in this design was awesome because it’s solid…they don’t have too many holes for crumbs to fall through. I think this type of granny square would be excellent for blankets. No little holes for toes to peek through either.

Enough with my chatter…let’s get down to the goods!

Finishing

Using a tapestry needle and orange yarn, whip stitch or mattress stitch your granny squares together according to the chart shown below and working through the back loops only. The orange diagonal lines indicate the half squares.

Once finished seaming, attach the orange yarn in the corner where the green stem square meets the top row of orange squares and begin single crocheting evenly around the entire pumpkin until you come to the opposite side of the green stem square. At each β€œcorner” (where the half squares meet the full squares), work 2 sc into those sts. This will happen 8 times as you work around the pumpkin and will keep the placemat laying flat instead of curling upward. Finish off. Weave in any ends.

Note: I recommend blocking the placemats before adding the vine.

Using the tail from the beginning of the FC of the Curly Vine and the final tail after finishing it, insert the two ends through the stitches of the orange square in the area shown in the photo below. Make sure that you don’t insert the tails into the same st. They need to wrap around the stitch so they don’t pull back through. You can use a tapestry needle or your hook to pull the strings through to the back. Tie the two ends together behind the placemat and weave in any ends into the green granny square. Allow the opposite end of the vine to dangle or you can tack it down if you prefer it to stay in one place.

  2. Thank you so much, Mandy! You’re comment made my day! I never used to block anything because, like you, I never really thought it needed it. It’s kind of a pain in the butt if I’m being honest. LOL! I’m glad that you agree that the ombre works better! I know right, yarn shopping…bummer. πŸ˜€

  3. You crack me up! Your blocking is great! I honestly hardly ever block my work. Then I stand there and stare at it and debate does this REALLY need to be blocked? Lol….
