So, first things first…
You will need to make a swatch using your intended hook and yarn for the project. Create a 5×5 swatch using either single crochets, half double crochets or double crochets.
Instructions for Single Crochet Swatch
Starting Chain: Chain 6.
Row 1: In the 2nd chain from the hook, single crochet. Single crochet in the last 4 chains. (5 sc)
Row 2: Chain 1, turn your work and single crochet in the next 5 stitches. (5 sc)
Row 3 through Row 5: Repeat Row 2.
Instructions for Half Double Crochet Swatch
Starting Chain: Chain 6.
Row 1: In the 3rd chain from the hook, half double crochet. (Chain 2 counts as hdc) Half double crochet in the last 3 chains. (5 hdc)
Row 2: Chain 2, turn your work and half double crochet in the next 4 stitches. (5 hdc)
Row 3 through Row 5: Repeat Row 2.
Instructions for Double Crochet Swatch
Starting Chain: Chain 7.
Row 1: In the 4th chain from the hook, double crochet. (Chain 3 counts as a dc) Double crochet in the last 3 chains. (5 dc)
Row 2: Chain 2, turn your work and double crochet in the next 4 stitches. (5 dc)
Row 3 through Row 5: Repeat Row 2.
Using a ruler, measure the height and width of your swatch. Now using the total number of blocks from your chosen graph or chart, input the numbers into the calculator below. This calculator will work whether you are using inches or centimeters. Simply put in the numbers only, but with your chosen measuring units in mind.
