Is it snowing where you are yet?
We’ve seen a couple flakes here in Pennsylvania, but it’s been way too warm for anything to stick. So in preparation for the white stuff, I designed an adorable snowman pillow!

This pillow covers a 16″ x 16″ pillow form and is a pretty easy pattern. The only stitches you will need to know are the single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet and that is mostly for the carrot nose! The entire pillow cover and scarf are done in single crochets. So, like I said, it’s pretty easy.
I love the soft squishiness of the Bernat Blanket yarn that I used for the main pillow cover. In order to reduce bulk and because of the better color selection, I mixed yarn brands when I used Red Heart Super Saver for the embellishments. Do you ever mix yarn brands or sizes? Let me know in the comments below!
My husband actually picked out these buttons at Hobby Lobby that I used for the eyes, mouth and closure on the back. He liked the fact that they didn’t look like buttons, but were kind of faceted like a piece of coal might be. I wasn’t so sure at first, but after I attached them, I knew he was right again. Dang it. Ha!
You could even customize the scarf’s colors to make the snowman male or female or to just match your decor!
Since this pattern is kind of long…I wrote out every single line of the Front Panel of the pillow cover along with stitch counts…I’m going to keep my chatter to a minimum. I hope you enjoy the pattern and have a lovely winter season!

Note: You will alternate Navy and Blue. Each stripe is 4 rows of single crochet.
With Navy
FC: Ch 13
Row 1: In 2nd ch from hook, sc. Sc in every ch across. Turn. (12 sc)

Finish off.
With Navy
Row 9 – Row 12: Repeat Row 2. (12 sc)
Finish off.
Continue to alternate the Navy and Blue until you have 49 stripes (or 196 rows).
Fringe
Cut 12 pieces of Navy and 12 pieces of Blue, each 7” long.
Along both edges of the scarf, attach one strand per stitch, alternating the colors. Twelve pieces of fringe on one end of the scarf and twelve on the other.
To attach the fringe, take one piece of yarn and fold it in half. Using your crochet hook, insert your hook into the stitch you wish to attach your fringe to. Hook the folded center of the yarn and pull back through the stitch half way. (There will be a loop on one side of the scarf and the two ends on the other side. Insert your hook through the loop and wrap around the two ends, pulling them through the loop. Make sure that all of this is done wrapping around the stitch of the scarf. Pull tight to secure. Repeat for the remaining pieces. Once finished, trim the ends so that they are even.
Carrot Nose
Make 1 using I/9 (5.50 mm) hook and size 4 yarn
FC: Ch 18
Round 1: In 2nd ch from hook, 4 sc. Sc in next 4 chs, hdc in next 7 chs, dc in next 4 chs. In last ch, 6 dc all in same ch. Working along the opposite edge of the FC, dc in next 4 chs, hdc in next 7 chs, sc in next 4 chs, sl st in 1st sc made of round.
Finish off. Leave a 12” – 14” tail for sewing.
Finishing
Using the tapestry needle, attach the Carrot Nose to the Front Panel of the pillow. Place the wider end of the carrot over the FC center according to the photo.
Using the sewing needle and black thread, attach the black buttons for the eyes and mouth according to the photo.
Lay the Front Panel flat on a surface with the snowman face facing upward. Lay the Back Panel #3 (with the button holes) on the top of the Front Panel as shown in the photo below.
Place the Back Panel #2 on top of the other two where the bottoms of the Back Panel #2 and the Front Panel are lined up and the top of the Back Panel #2 is slightly overlapping the Back Panel #3.
The pillow is now “inside out”. Place your safety pins or stitch markers around the pillow to keep the panels in place for sewing.
Using the tapestry needle and the size 6 yarn, begin stitching the entire way around the pillow. You can use the mattress stitch, whip stitch or any other joining method of your choice. Be sure to stitch through all three thicknesses where the panels overlap as shown in the photo above.
Flip the pillow right side out and lay flat on a surface with the snowman face facing downward.
Using the sewing needle and black thread, attach the three buttons for the closure to the Back Panel #2, lined up with the button holes on Back Panel #3.
Flip the pillow cover over so that the face is facing upward again.
Fold the scarf in half so that the two fringed ends are touching and even. The center Navy stripe will be folded in half. Using the tapestry needle and size 4 yarn and beginning at the fold, whip stitch the long ends on one side only for 14 more stripes (not including the center Navy stripe that is folded over). See photo below. Finish off. Flip the scarf inside out. This will make a kind of “cup” for the pillow to sit in. The remainder of the scarf will hang loosely on one side for you to tie later.
Insert the pillow cover between the folded over scarf as shown in the photo below. Using the size 4 yarn and tapestry needle, tack stitch the scarf to the Front and Back Panel #2, but make sure you are only stitching through one thickness and not both. You will need to insert your hand into the pillow cover opening to stitch through only one thickness.
Insert your pillow form.
Gently tie the two loose ends of the scarf once and let hang. Fasten the buttons on the back.
