Crocheted using simple stitches, this pattern is absolutely beginner friendly! You only need to know how to single crochet and double crochet. The size 5 bulky weight yarn and N (9.00 mm) crochet hook make easy and quick work of this project, which makes it perfect for last minute gift giving!
While I was strolling through Hobby Lobby one day, I spotted this yarn called Yarn Bee Cotton XXL. I didn’t intend to buy any yarn that day, but once I got my hands on this chunky cotton goodness, I had to have some. Have you ever seen cotton yarn in a size 5 bulky weight before? I hadn’t.
If you don’t have a Hobby Lobby near you or access to the bulky cotton yarn, you can simply use any brand size 5 bulky weight yarn that you wish.
After a lot of thought, I decided that I didn’t want to make washcloths with them because, to be honest, I have a ton of handmade washcloths. I just didn’t need any more. So as I thought about the beautiful spring colors that I bought, it dawned on me that I should make a sweet little bag for gathering brightly colored Easter eggs!
You can customize this pattern by changing the colors and/or ribbon that is threaded through the stitches. Even though this example is geared more towards the Easter holiday, you could certainly create a trendy handbag for an adult by putting your own design spin on this pattern.
All right…let’s get started!

Attaching the ribbon
Cut an approximately 52” length of ribbon that has a width of 5/8”.
Lay your bag out flat with what you would prefer to be the front of the bag facing upward.
At the left edge of your bag, begin counting double crochets toward the center. In between the 11th and 12th dc, insert one end of your ribbon toward the interior of the bag. Leave several inches of the opposite end of the ribbon hanging without pulling the entire way through. This will be part of the bow. Pull the ribbon back out again between the 12th and 13th dc.
Skip 10 dc and insert your ribbon in between the next two dc. Pull the ribbon back out again on the other side of that dc.
After skipping 11 more dc, insert your ribbon again and bring it back out on the other side of that dc.
Skip 11 more dc, insert your ribbon again and bring it back out on the other side of that dc.
Finally, skip 9 dc, insert your ribbon and bring it back out on the other side of that dc.
Your two ends should both be sticking out of the same hole. Adjust your ribbon anywhere that it may have twisted or kinked. Make sure your two ends are of equal length. Do not cinch the bag with the ribbon. Leave it the same width as the bag itself. Tie a simple bow.
